NHL Stenden

During the ‘Tourism Management’ study program at NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences, you will start working for clients in the tourism sector from day one. You will work in small groups to develop new tourism products and create unique experiences for different types of destinations and tourists. The main focus is on sustainable tourism. The final year of the curriculum includes an internship in the tourism industry.

This not only gives you the chance to invest in your personal development, but also offers an excellent job opportunity after graduation.

This curriculum guarantees a degree that is recognised on a European and global scale, enabling graduates to enter the job market quickly and effectively, both locally and internationally.

“Hello! I’m Pim, an International Tourism Management student at NHL Stenden in Leeuwarden. During my studies, I learn not only about the tourism industry, but also about the specific skills needed to be successful in an international environment. I am currently doing an internship at Juvigo GmbH in Berlin, where I get the chance to put my knowledge into practice.

During my training, I develop essential skills, such as sustainable entrepreneurship and communicating effectively within intercultural teams.

During my internship at Juvigo, I apply these abilities directly and develop my practical skills. I work closely with a diverse team of professionals from different countries every day, which makes the work very interesting! At Juvigo, I see how the international company aligns its strategy with different markets, and how important diversity is within the team. In my opinion, this is a good reflection of Berlin as a city; open, diverse and international.

In short, this internship allows me to combine and further develop the theoretical knowledge and practical skills I gain at NHL Stenden, in an international environment where I can expand my network.”

“Hey, I’m Annalie. In September 2024, I started my internship at Juvigo as part of my International Tourism Management studies at NHL Stenden. Having focused mainly on theoretical subjects during the first few years of my studies, I already feel quite at home in the tourism sector. Because I have gradually gained knowledge on all kinds of subjects, I now feel that I have a good starting position as a young professional in the tourism industry at the start of my career.

Juvigo provides an educational and safe environment to learn in order to get better and take on more responsibility with every step. During my internship at Juvigo, I see more and more what I was trained for and what tourism is really about. I am given the space to continue learning through trial and error, which made me feel at home from day one. Being able to take the first step towards my future career this way makes me feel very grateful!”

To give you a glimpse into the daily life of our amazing colleagues, Pim and Annalie, among others, take you through their international internship at Juvigo.

Interview with Christiaan van der Ham

We spoke with Christiaan, lecturer and expert at NHL Stenden. He took us through his daily work and explained the role he plays in the field of education. He also gave valuable insights into the partnership between NHL Stenden and Juvigo, highlighting how this cooperation helps students gain practical experience and contributes to their professional development.

My name is Christiaan van der Ham. I have completed several studies in the field of tourism and heritage myself. Through various jobs and internships, I got to know the world of tourism. I have now been working in education for quite some time, passing on knowledge and experience. I also work for the internship department of NHL Stenden, together with my colleague Ellen. Besides that I manage the alumni network of our programme – International Tourism Management.

For me, a typical working day is a combination of different tasks. Every day I correspond with tourism companies to promote (internship) positions to students, I keep in touch with alumni, collect their work experiences and tips, and I teach. I also contribute to study excursions when students visit tourism companies at home and abroad.

I have fond memories of the youth trips I participated in. These trips went to Italy and the Czech Republic. I remember lots of fun, great activities, good leadership and, as a result, a closely connected youth group. I can therefore recommend it to everyone.

At the ITB (Internationale Tourismus-Börse Berlin), I met Björn and as a result we shared Juvigo’s internships with our students. For several years now, our students have known how to find their way to Berlin.

Ellen and I visit Juvigo every year and explore how we can improve the partnership even more. Be it at the ITB, but we enjoy visiting the company just as much. This way, we have gotten to know the company well and are able to hear many great stories from the employees.

The internships are ideal for our students and also a great launchpad in their careers. It is a combination of a challenging internship, a fun, young team and a nice city to live in. These are three important factors for a good internship.
